Review: The Last Affair
The Last Affair by Margot HuntMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Is it strange that what I took away from this book is the belief that true love really can be found in the midst of an elicit affair after all? Sure, you might have to murder someone as they stand in their own backyard, and you’ll likely need to drive someone to drink again after years of sobriety resulting in them losing their job, and yeah, maybe the the kids involved will need extensive therapy in the future - but it's all in the name of love, baby! There’s a happy ending baked in there somewhere if you actively choose to abandon all regard for everyone else and focus solely on your own selfish desires.
I liked this story because clearly I am a disgraceful person at heart who enjoys reading about the devastation of others and the downfall of marriages. Give me a break, I’ve had quite the year. But, I feel confident saying that even if I didn’t thoroughly salivate over such salacious plot lines, this would still be considered a solid read. It was a well written and very realistic portrayal of very flawed people involved in a very common domestic conundrum. Minus the getting murdered part. Unless you’re in a rough neighborhood and / or associated with unstable, unhinged individuals - in that case, you might want to watch your back if you’re considering cheating on your spouse because you or someone you know may be getting their brain bashed in with a blunt object at any given time.
But for the rest of us, let’s circle back to the top, and simply believe in the power of love (and in the power of not giving any F’s about anyone else) and call it a day.
