Review: Lie to Me
Lie to Me by J.T. EllisonMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I found this book to be quite believable. Not because I necessarily think people often up and disappear and frame their spouse for their inevitable death (but no judgement if you decide this is the life for you), but because I think most marriages are not what they seem and many people wish they could run off and start new lives without their spouses. How’s that for some harsh truth. Sorry not sorry. Mic drop.
Throughout the course of this narrative, we get to know Ethan and Sutton (props to the author for using a really great female moniker) and the details of their marriage in turmoil and we as the reader are left to determine who is more believable of the two. There is also an annoying third narrator who pops up every fifth or sixth chapter, but honestly, this novel could have done without her. Oh, ya, spoiler - it’s a “her” - since we’re not told this until the end.
What I liked most about this novel is the fact that I changed my opinion on who the villain was multiple times as the story progressed. I appreciate when an author can convince me of something different in each chapter. I tend to be easily manipulated in my real life, so why not incorporate this adorable aspect into my literature? Bravo, J.T. Ellison. Ya did good, kid.
Is this plot stand out original and something people will be talking about for years to come (...or even now)? Probably not. And it’s certainly not without a borderline corny ending. But it IS one of the better renditions of the “they seemed to have the perfect marriage....” storyline we all know and (pretend not to) love, so I’ll take what I can get.
